Anonymous is right. It’s like screaming at a brick wall. If you can’t see how this is racist, even after it’s been spelt out for you, then you apparently lack the intellectual capacity to grasp that your shit ain’t funny. Saying it’s just a joke, or “but I’m being so subversive”, is just an excuse you use to continue on your racist merry way without ever having to take responsibility for yourself, ever check your privilege, or admit that you done fucked up. And boy, you done fucked up.
People of colour, and only people of colour, can use racist tropes and turn them on their heads to be subversive.
When you do it, when white people do it, it’s just plain, old-fashioned racism. When a straight person makes a joke about killing his kids if they were gay, it’s not comedy, it’s not being subversive, it’s being fucking homophobic and a terrible person. When men make jokes about women being barefoot in the kitchen it’s not cute, it’s not clever, and it sure as fuck isn’t subversive. It’s straight up misogynist bullshit.
Let me be clear, I am in no way saying racism is the same as homophobia or misogyny. Rather, I am only pointing out that when the group that has historically been the oppressor of another group uses stereotypes of the oppressed group in an attempt at humour, regardless of how innocently or well intentioned the humour, they’re only furthering and cementing that oppression.
White people cannot EVER do something, say something, draw something, write something racist and not at the same time be compounding, cementing, reinforcing, and perpetuating racism.
